What is an Online or Virtual Quilt?
A quilt was traditionally made by sewing together patches of cloth from different sources. They were useful, for one, because cloth that could not be made into anything else- old clothes, torn blankets, bits and pieces could be put to use to make a warm, working quilt. Quilt sewing was also a community activity, when members of a household or a social circle would sit together and sew their quilts. Often elaborate and aesthetic patterns were incorporated into the quilt, and some antique quilts are considered priceless treasures because of their beauty.
A virtual quilt is made by putting together 'patches' (usually GIF or PNG images) made by different people. Each patch says something about its owner, and links back to that owner's website. A person's virtual quilt patch is essentially a colourful collection of links to the websites of other people with virtual quilts.
Often, patches are obtained through a patch exchange - that is, two quilt owners agree to put up eachother's quilt patch on their own website. The Quilting Bee is one such virtual quilting community, and its members all have a 'quilt page' where they display their patches as well as patches belonging to other members, with whom they have exchanged patches. Some members make extraordinarily creative quilts, designed to mimic real quilts, by arranging their patches in geometrical patterns within a square or rectangular layout, rather than displaying them in a random fashion.
It would seem that virtual quilting really is the virtual counterpart to the socialising activity that traditional quilting really is :)
